WHITBY Cricket Club is aiming to raise £20,000 to improve the Turnbull Ground facilities – and it is calling on the help of local people to help achieve the goal.
Chairman John Hall told the Gazette the club needs to build a new shed for the cutter and is also looking to buy an electronic scoreboard, remote controlled from the pavilion, as well as sightscreens.
It is part of the evolution of the cricket club
which embarks on the start of its final campaign in the Scarborough and District Beckett League (v Forge Valley home) on Saturday before moving on to a new one next season.
There are numerous, ongoing fund-raising events such as bag packs and tombolas to make the cash needed but anyone who would like to pledge cash or help with donations in any way can contact the club.
On the playing side, the club wants to continue to nurture its promising young players.
Callum Gibson is this year making the step up to the first XI while another junior, Darren Mills, will be playing for Scarborough academy in a bid to fulfil his full potential.
And the club is pleased to see the progress of another local man, Adam Lyth, who has moved on from Whitby juniors and has more recently been playing cup ties for Yorkshire. The talented batsman has also represented his country at under 19 level.
"We're trying to encourage the younger aspect," said Mr Hall.
"These are examples of the work we have done with them, by putting in the new facilities like the nets and having coaching from our overseas players. The captain is keen to introduce good young players and we're very optimistic about the future.
"We are moving from the Beckett League to the North Yorkshire and South Durham League next summer and it is about the continual progression of the club."
* IF you can help out with sponsorship or any other funding, call Mr Hall on (01947) 821110 or Pauline Russell on 605061.
