WHITBY Community College's hockey team were crowned Scarborough and district under 16s champions after being pushed all the way to penalties by Fyling Hall.
Keeper Katherine Back emerged the heroine with a string of fine saves to claim the knockout match for the college.
There is a strong rivalry between Whitby and Fyling Hall so the match was going to be very competitive and it turned out to be a close game.
In the first half Whitby had a fair amount of possession, but from a breakaway, Fyling Hall had a shot on goal which keeper Back saved brilliantly, but Fyling Hall scored from the rebound to take the lead.
Whitby put a lot of pressure on Fyling Hall's defence and after a few unlucky misses Whitby got a goal back after a speedy shot from Hope Rodgers towards the end of the first half.
At the start of the second half the score was 1-1.
Fyling Hall came back strongly but Whitby's defence played brilliantly and managed to keep the ball out of the shooting circle.
As the final whistle drew close, both teams pressed but but could not be separated so Whitby held on for extra time and a further 10 minutes each way.
Attacks were frequent from both teams but the score remained 1-1.
A decision had to be made whether to share the trophy or go to penalties. Whitby did not want to share the trophy so penalties it was.
And with an excellent effort from Katherine Back in goal, saving every shot, Whitby had a comfortable 3-1 win after extra time and the shoot-out.
Thanks to college PE teachers Lucy Parker and Julie Mastrolonardo as well as loyal supporters Harry Schofield, Pat Nedley, Rich Lane and Beth Grason.
