Tuesday’s Gazette mentions negotiations between NYCC and SBC for a back-up plan to operate the bridge manually.
I take it that this means replacing the capstan mechanisms (wonderful), but let’s expand on this.
The capstan workings consisted of handles inserted through the roadway, three or four handles to each side of the bridge, the access plates are still there.
The only drawback is manpower. I think that visitors would willingly pay £10 per handle with a small certificate stating I opened Whitby Swing Bridge. So a simple booking system would generate welcome funds towards maintenance.
The electric motors or hydraulic would be reserved for unsociable hours, saving wear and tear.
