I helped do a fund-raising bag pack at the Whitby Co-op and was shocked at the number of customers who did hot bring used carriers or re-usable bags with them.
I expected it would be a minority but it was actually the majority of customers.
How many of us have a drawer full of carriers at home and add more to them every week?
Wales and Northern Ireland have a five pence charge per bag and have dramatically reduced the number handed out at till points.
Scotland will follow their lead on October 2014 and, hopefully, England will, eventually. Please don’t wait for legislation, let’s save the planet from the scourge of plastic and say ‘No’ to plastic carriers.
