A family have uncovered a wartime letter hidden under the floorboards of their home in Kirby’s on Whitby’s West Cliff.

The letter, which was dated October 1918, was sent from a mother to her son known only as Bal who is believed to have lived at one of the properties in East Terrace.

It was found by a plumber working on the home of the late Ken Baird (82) an internationally acknowledged documentary photographer whose daughter Lynn Bracewell (54) and daughter Holly (15) brought it into the Gazette offices.

The mother writes in the letter of her hopes the war will be over. Mrs Bracewell said: “In the letter she talks about people that have died, it’s quite a fascinating little bit of history.”
