A woman has suffered head injuries after being hit by a car in Whitby.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the scene on the A171 in Whitby near Caedmon School at 4.05pm.

The casualty has been transported by air ambulance to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough after sustaining the head injuries, which are not said to be life threatening.

The A171 in Whitby is closed from the Scarborough side and there are queues from traffic eastbound between the A174 junction and the Helredale Road junction.

A diversion is in operation.
