WEST End sensation the Calendar Girls is coming to a theatre near Whitby in the autumn – and the Whitby Gazette has tickets to give away to lucky readers in our fantastic competition.
Lynda Bellingham will lead the cast in the final tour of the stage show, which runs for just a week at Scarborough’s Futurist theatre and is based on the 2003 film of the same name.
Lynda, who presents ITV’s afternoon chatshow Loose Women, played Helen Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small and was in a long-running series of Oxo TV adverts.
Since opening at the Chichester Festival Theatre in September 2008, Calendar Girls has been an unprecedented success, playing more than 100 sell-out weeks at theatres across the country as well as a triumphant run in London’s West End.
Calendar Girls has since become the most successful play to ever tour the UK and has grossed more at the box office than the smash hit film.
The play has had several casts to keep the show fresh.
This allows producers to bring in well-known actresses who don’t want to commit to long runs.
A group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire WI, persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference.
Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children and riding the wrath of an outraged WI, they inadvertently spark a global phenomenon.
As interest in the calendar snowballs, the ladies find themselves revealing more than they’d ever planned.
The show’s producer David Pugh said: “”I’m thrilled that Calendar Girls will be coming to the area.
“Over the past two years, we’ve sold out at every single theatre we’ve visited and I have no doubt that we’ll do the same at the Futurist Theatre in September.
“Yorkshire is where this wonderful story began back in 1998 and it’s fantastic that the people of North Yorkshire will have the chance to see the show on their doorstep.
“I’m also delighted that Lynda Bellingham will be leading an all-star cast – watch this space for more details.”
Calendar Girls is on at the Futurist Theatre from 19 to 24 September.
Tickets priced from £12.50 are now on sale and are available from the box office by calling (01723) 374500/365789 and online at www.futuristtheatre.co.uk
