Heroes across Whitby and

district are to be recognised at a superb community awards ceremony.

And we need your nominations!

People who have carried out good deeds, community-minded volunters and outstanding efforts for charity are just some of the types of commitment that will be recognised at the Borough’s Big Thank You Awards.

The scheme is being run by the mayor of the borough Cllr Andrew Backhouse, in conjunction with the Whitby Gazette.

The winners will be announced at Scarborough’s Spa Complex on April 3.

There is a new range of categories forming the 2014 awards – including Good Deeds, Volunteer of the Year, and a School or College nomination for a student they think deserves wider recognition for efforts or contributions above the norm.

Other nominations can be made for Creative Efforts to honour artistic effort, performance and cultural efforts, and Borough Pride, a new class which will recognise general effort to improve the borough’s environment, attractions or reputation.

The latest awards will also place particular focus on the borough’s youth.

The judges have introduced new categories such as Young Entrepreneur or Achiever and Young Carer or Helper.

There are still the usual categories for Courage over Adversity to acknowledge any young person who has faced or overcome difficulties, and for Uniformed Groups, to recognise organisations such as scouts, cadets and guides or their helpers and organisers.

Nominees also stand the chance of winning the mayor’s Award, as well as The Scarborough News Award, or a Honorary Freeman Max Payne memorial trophy which will be announced on the night.

Cllr Backhouse said he was pleased to be able to honour the stars and community heroes of the borough in what will be another spectacular and successful awards night.

He said: “I am delighted to be involved with this year’s awards.

“It’s good to recognise the members of our community who do such sterling work. “I am particularly pleased that we are offering the opportunity to recognise the efforts of our youth in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey.”

Please use the nomination form which will be repeated at intervals in our newspapers and which will be available from our offices and offices of the council in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

The closing date for nominations is Monday February 17 but please complete and return the form now so we can publish some of them.
