IN being crowned this year’s Miss Regatta, Abby Hall has become the third generation of her family to be chosen to wear the famous regatta tiara and sash.
Seventeen-year-old Abby, a student at Whitby Community College, was this week announced as Miss Regatta and will now take centre stage during the celebrations next weekend.
Abby, an English literature and musical theatre student who can sometimes be seen busking around Whitby, said she didn’t even know she had been entered into the competition.
“It was a bit of a shock,” she said. “I didn’t know I had been nominated until the night before – mum thought I would flip out.”
This year’s Miss Regatta contest was the first Abby has ever taken part in, but her family has a winning history in the competition. Her grandmother, Irene Waller, was one of the first people ever crowned Miss Regatta, while aunt, Teresa Winspear, followed in her footsteps in the 1970s.
“I can’t wait to be a queen for a day,” added Abby, who also dances with the Benson Stage Academy. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The Miss Regatta judging panel said: “Once again it was a very difficult decision to choose Miss Regatta as a number of the entrants would have fitted the role very well.
“However, Abby was the unanimous choice and we expect she will prove a huge success.”
