THE Whitby Gazette’s Fight For Our Fleet fishing campaign won a major award at its parent company Johnston Press’ inaugural Excellence Awards last Friday.
The campaign brought a huge response after the Gazette editorial team organised a meeting with MEPs in Whitby and for the remaining fishing skippers to meet Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon.
More than 3,000 people signed the paper’s petition. Two eight-page supplements were produced in January which boosted revenue and resulted in spin-off stories and hundreds of old pictures being brought in.
The Gazette was credited with helping to secure £10,000 funding for equipment in the harbour. The fishermen and their families have been overwhelmed by the support as a result of coverage.
The company’s introduced the awards to encourage and recognise exceptional efforts from newspaper staff in the north division.
