THE lifeboat’s Welly Walk will not take place this year after only a small number of people signed up to the fund-raiser.
The 21-mile walk from Scarborough to Whitby was due to take place on Saturday 21 April, but a spokesperson said: “The RNLI is currently reviewing the way we raise funds to ensure our charity gets the very best result from all the activity we undertake.
“Because of this review, and after careful consideration, we have decided that the Whitby Welly Walk and Cycle will not take place in 2012.
“Only a handful of people had registered to take part and they have all had their entry fee refunded.”
Last year’s RNLI Welly Walk in Whitby attracted about 150 people and raised around £6,000 for the RNLI.
However, the spokesperson added: “We understand some people will be disappointed by this decision but there will be several other opportunities for local people to support the RNLI this year.
“We are also exploring new ways for people to fund-raise for us in future.
“Without the continued generosity of the public, our charity’s volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards would be unable to carry on saving lives at sea.
“The RNLI is fortunate to receive fantastic support from people in Whitby and the surrounding area and we very much hope this will continue.”
