Whitby is a finalist in a BBC Radio 5 Live competition that will see the winning town transformed into a city for the day.
As part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations one town in the UK will be granted permanent city status, but 5 Live are hosting a competition to celebrate the smaller side of Britain.
Whitby was nominated in the competition by Darren Marsh, owner of Sea Glimpse holiday lettings, said that if the town was to become 5 Live’s City of 2012, it would be “great for the town”.
The town is now in a head-to-head battle with two other finalists - Bungay in Suffolk and Bradford upon Avon.
