Police later confirmed that the man passed away at James Cook University Hospital yesterday.

Richard Cotton (77), a retired ambulance crewmember, was fossil hunting with his son and grandson when he saw the man falling.

He rushed to the man’s aid and said it was clear the man was in a critical condition.

“He fell all the way from the top,” said Mr Cotton. “I thought it was a rock falling at first, there was no noise and it just didn’t seem real.”

Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the fall or saw the man prior to the incident to contact them on 101, select option 1, and pass information to the Force Control Room, quoting reference number NYP-21102013-0202 when passing on information about this incident.
