A 69 year-old man is seriously ill in hospital after being found collapsed while out cycling earlier today (Wednesday).

The cyclist was discovered in a collapsed state on the A171 near Fylingdales Moor - close to the junction with Helwath Road - at around 12.45pm.

He was attended to by paramedics before being transported by air ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough in a serious condition.

The A171 between Whitby and Scarborough was closed until 2pm while the air ambulance assisted.

North Yorkshire Police say it is being treated as a medical rather than police incident.
