A SMALL speedboat got into a lot of bother on Sunday when it suffered engine failure just north of Whitby.
At around 3.15pm the Coastguard received a number of 999 calls from members of the public who reported seeing a red flare launched offshore.
Whitby’s all-weather lifeboat was launched and discovered a six-metre speedboat with three persons on board.
The trio were bailing out water from the vessel as a strong swell and offshore breeze meant they were in a lot of trouble.
They also had no radio and no mobile phone signal and so were forced to discharge the flare.
The RNLI crew were able to establish a tow and bring the vessel back into Whitby harbour, where the crew were met by Whitby Coastguards at the Fish Quay.
