A NEW transport service for the elderley and disabled in Whitby was launched last Friday.

Run by Good Neighbours Community Transport, the “Ring & Ride” service will get people to essential services such as medical appointments, day centres and shopping.

Coun Chris Metcalfe the North Yorkshire County Council Executive Member for transport handed the keys for a specially adapted Mercedes van to Alan Lund, the manager of Good Neighbours, at a ceremony at the Green Lane centre.

The van, driven by volunteers, will operate across Whitby, Sleights, Ruswarp, Sandsend, Lythe and Hawsker and journeys needs to be booked the day before.

Alan Lund Manager for Good Neighbours said “I’m really excited about the launch of this new innovative project.

“The Ring & Ride is really going to benefit those people most disadvantaged in our society who are unable to use other forms of transport to access essential services due to either rural or social isolation.

The Ring & Ride in turn will hopefully free up some of our volunteer car drivers who will then be free to carry out more rural journeys and those longer distance trips taking passengers to hospital appointments further afield.”
