A motorist says she feels lucky to be alive and is now recovering at home after being airlifted to hospital following a car crash on Monday afternoon.

The mum of one, who asked not to be named because she is still dazed and shocked by the incident, had to be cut free from her car by the fire brigade after the smash which involved a Vauxhall Vivaro van being driven by a 51 year-old man.

She was taken to James Cook Hospital with suspected pelvic injuries but discharged later that day.

The 32 year-old from Whitby added that the emergency services had been “amazing”.

The van driver managed to get himself out of his vehicle but was also taken to hospital after suffering leg and head injuries, including a cut above his eye.

It happened on Hawsker bends at around 1.24pm and the road was partially closed while the incident was dealt with but re-opened by 3.45pm.
