Man seriously injured in New Year’s Eve four car smash

One man has been seriously injured after a four car pile up on the outskirts of Whitby on New Year’s Eve.

There were several other people injured amid reports that one of the vehicles involved was on fire.

Police say it happened on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road just past the Lythe turn-off towards Scaling Dam at about 5.15pm.

Police, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene with reports that one of the vehicles was on fire.

Paramedics treated several casualties from the vehicles, with one man taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries.

The stretch of road was closed for several hours last night while police carried out a detailed examination of the collision scene and the vehicles were recovered.
