TAXI drivers in Whitby have been given the thumbs up following a series of secret spot checks.
A multi-agency inspection to randomly check taxiswas held in the town by North Yorkshire Police, along with North Yorkshire County Council and Scarborough Borough Council.
Coun Brian Watson, chairman of the licensing committee, said: “I am very pleased with the way the operation ahs been conducted and I am aware that the vast majority of licensed drivers are very diligent and ensure they are wearing their badges and check their vehicles thoroughly before commencing work. I am delight to acknowledge that there has been an improvement in compliance.”
Out of the 18 taxi and private hire, eight vehicles were given a clean bill of health.
Of the others, three received verbal advisory notifications relating to potential defects, such as tyre wear, while four others had at least one defect.
No immediate suspensions for serious defects were necessary and no fixed penalty notices were issued.
These results are an improvement on the last spot checks which took place. These resulted in two immediate suspensions, one delayed suspension and nine verbal advisory notifications being issued.
