A REUNION is taking place for the families of those directly involved with the visit of HM Bark Endeavour in 1997.

The replica vessel celebrated her 18th birthday in December last year, but now members of the original team are inviting the families who hosted six schoolchildren from Fremantle in Western Australia to a reunion on 14 September.

The venue is Trencher’s Restaurant at 7pm and Debbie Gibson, who has travelled the world as a volunteer guide of the vessel, said: “We have an opportunity to meet up once again, rekindle friendships and enjoy sharing our recollections and memories of 15 years ago.

“The Whitby community and in particular the West Cliff School community were so wonderful during Endeavour’s maiden visit, so we hope to catch up and meet as many of you as we can.”

Endeavour has just completed her 2011-12 circumnavigation voyage of Australia, with Captain Ross Matson keeping a watchful eye over the crew and proceedings. She sailed in an anti-clockwise direction northwards from Sydney, witnessing the Transit of Venus from Lord Howe Island, not Tahiti - as Cook had previously done.

For more information about attending the reunion, email Debbie Gibson on rossmoyneps@hotmail.com by 11 September.
