THE newly refurbished clock on Whitby’s old Town Hall has stopped chiming, prompting anger from one concerned resident.
The clock mechanism was restored last summer as part of a major renovation of the 200-year-old building in Market Place.
Chris Dove of Blackburn’s Yard has raised concerns the clock has been malfunctioning and is now not chiming at all.
He said: “Since September, when the clock was reconditioned, there have been problems with the chimes.
“The new mechanism for the chimes is supposed to be controlled by a computer which can be programmed to sound as and when required.
“However, the chimes have been all over the place, no chimes after 11pm until 8am, irregular chimes at other times and no chimes at all.”
A spokesman for Scarborough Borough Council’s Asset Management team said: “We are aware of the recent problems with the old town hall clock.
“We disconnected the chiming mechanism when it was reported to us that it had been chiming inconsistently.
“Smiths of Derby, the company that carried out the recent restoration of the clock is currently looking into the options available to get the chimes working correctly again.”
