SUPPORT for the Farewell Parade in Whitby later today has been “phenomenal”.
Whitby Town Council said there had been massive support from local residents and businesses for its organisation of the freedom parade which will see about 200 soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment – formerly the Green Howards – march through town.
Town clerk Pam Dobson said: “We have just had so much support from people and we are really grateful bearing in mind we have only had about eight weeks to organise this from start to finish.
“It has been a pleasure to be involved with the councillors on the working party because they have worked so hard and put in every effort to make sure that this goes off successfully.”
Flags have been handed out to over 600 schoolchildren who will be waving them as the parade passes them by.
It starts at the Church Street car park at 11.15am and continues over the swing bridge, along Baxtergate and Bagdale and up Chubb Hill and into Pannett Park where there will be a Civic Reception.
