Suspected drink driver almost goes over cliff near Whitby

A suspected drink driver narrowly avoided disaster after becoming stuck on a cliff ledge earlier today.

Emergency services were called to Whitby Holiday Park at Saltwick Bay at 10.45am today (Wednesday 26 October 2016) following reports of a single-vehicle collision on the edge of the cliff.

The blue Vauxhall Astra ended up stuck on a ledge three metres down the cliff.

It was secured to a 4x4 and Coastguard team members were on hand to ensure the 53-year-old man was brought to safety.


Paramedics examined him at the scene and confirmed he was uninjured.

An air ambulance was called to attend but it was stood down.


The man, who is from Bingley, West Yorkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

He is being held in custody for questioning.
