Two events are being held in Whitby on Sunday to commemmorate one of the town’s most famous names.

October 27 is the birthday of sea-faring legend Captain James Cook and each year a service is held to pay tribute to the explorer who learned his craft in the town.

Dignitaries and a fishermen’s choir will attend a service at St Mary’s Church at 11.15am followed by a reception at the Royal Hotel.

There will then be wreath laying at the West Cliff Captain Cook statue.
