A wonderful array of colourful, costumed characters left the judges of Hinderwell’s scarecrow festival with a particularly tough task.

Whitby Gazette sports editor Duncan Atkins and his family accepted the challenge of walking around Hinderwell and Port Mulgrave, taking numerous photos of the many entrants before selecting their top three plus several highly commended.

They came across some weird and wonderful creations along the way, including several based on the theme of the Royal baby, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, plus TV and children’s storybook characters.

After much deliberation, a fruit scone and a refreshing cuppa, the final three were:

1) Alice in Wonderland

2) Peter Pan

3) Despicable Me

Carol Barker, who is on scarecrow committee, said: “It amazes us where people get their ideas from and have so many ways of making a scarecrow.”
