The powerboat event in Scarborough has been cancelled this morning.

Today's inaugural P1 race event in Scarborough has been cancelled due to swelling sea conditions.

It is said there is too much sea swell meaning the P1 Dale Power Solutions Yorkshire Grand Prix of the Sea will not take place today (May 14).

Some Jet skis have been out today in Scarborough but no powerboat racing will take place.

Race organisers have told The Scarborough News that they have suspended the racing today due to "wild seas" today.

A spokesman said: "In events such as this, safety is paramount. In these conditions, a boat could land on top of another so we have called the races off. At the moment it too difficult for event the safety boats to put things in place with the sea swelling up to three or four meters. Some boats may get chance to go out and practice later if the conditions improve ahead of tomorrow's events. Hopefully we can have a great day tomorrow despite today's disappointment."

Some Jet skis and hover boards have been able to make it out on the water today but no powerboat racing will commence.

Proceedings are still due to take place tomorrow with the hope of a further two races being added to the lineup.
