Sam scoops dog show crown

Scrufts dog show saw around 140 pet pooches entered into the competition, with an old boy named Sam awarded best in show.

The dog show is unusual as it sees animals judged upon happiness and waggily tails as much as breeding, and Labrador-cross Sam topped the bill.

The event is hosted by Whitby and Scarborough Dog Rescue and chief judge Julie Morrisey said: “It all went very smoothly, we didn’t have any scraps. All the dogs and all the owners seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

A brief rain shower during the ‘prettiest lady’ category was not enough to discourage participants and dog rescue owner Chris Watson said: “The emphasis is on it being a fun dog show. It makes us feel really good to see one of our own dogs, when it comes in needing help and its now gone out to a happy home.”
