After half a century in the motors trade – for much of the time on 24-hour breakdown standby – Bob Headlam was tasting the pleasures of rising a little later in the morning.

His rescue missions at all hours and in all weathers, came to an end 25 years ago, and the keys of the breakdown truck were handed to colleagues at Stakesby Garage, Whitby. Mr Headlam (65) was thanked for his long and loyal service by managing director Neil Arundale who presented him with a video recorder.

General manager Mike Tebbitt presented Mr Headlam’s wife Kathleen with a bouquet.
