Unprecedented scenes marked Whitby Town’s FA Amateur Cup replay with Athenian League side Harwich and Parkeston before a record crowd of 4,000 spectators at the Turnbull Ground 50 years ago this month.

Nearby car parks and every street within a mile-and-a-half radius of the ground were filled with cars and coaches and the ground bulged at the seams with supporters, who surged on to the pitch after the final whistle confirmed Whitby’s victory by the odd goal in five and passage to the last four of the competition, one stage from a date at Wembley Stadium in the final.
