Schoolchildren in Whitby turned popstars for the day as they prepared to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire to town.

Pop singer and keen cyclist Alistair Griffin spent the day at East Whitby school with pupils from Castleton, Danby, Lealholm, Glaisdale, Egton, St Hedda’s, St Hilda’s, Hawsker, Sleights, Ruswarp, West Cliff Stakesby and East Whitby

They re-recorded his single Road which was released last year as the official single for the Tour de France which was the inspiration for the creation of the Tour de Yorkshire race.

He told the Gazette: “My auntie works at East Whitby and we were talking about the Tour de France and thought it might be good to come to Whitby and spread the goodwill and got as many school kids in it as we could.

“The Tour de France was one of those moments where communities come together and have a party and celebrate and doing this song today was similar. The Esk Valley is going to look amazing.”

Alistair will be hosting an after party in Danby Village Hall.
