SCHOOLS were out, businesses downed tools, residents put paid to their daily routine and visitors halted their sight seeing to pay tribute to Yorkshire’s soldiers.
Thousands lined the streets to bid farewell to the Second Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment who marched through the town before being treated to a Civic reception.
They will be departing next month for a two year tour of Cyprus. Some of them will be deployed to Afghanistan.
It was the first time in living memory such a parade had been held in the town and Mayor of Whitby Coun John Freeman said it was a “privilege” to welcome the troops to our town.
