TWELVE households in Whitby have fallen foul of the bedroom tax rules and seen their arrears increase since its introduction in April.
A total of 75 households in the town have been affected by government reforms to benefits and led to an increase of £10,000 being owed to Yorkshire Coast Homes which manages the majority of Whitby’s social housing.
The organisation has appointed welfare reform advisors, housing officers and a money management officer to help residents with housing payments which have changed depending on how many unoccupied bedrooms there are in the household.
Sarah Bird, Assistant Director of Communities said, “The introduction of the welfare reforms has had a huge effect across our communities. Although the number affected in Whitby isn’t as high as other regions, the households affected by the under occupancy charge have been significantly affected.”
