THE METHODIST minister for the Whitby circuit has retired and is looking to cultivate new hobbies.

Rev Stuart Gunson conducted his last circuit service on Sunday 31 July at Fylingthorpe followed by a celebratory songs of praise service at Briggswath.

A presentation was made to him and his wife Marion on behalf of his congregations prior to him leaving Whitby and moving to Epworth in Lincolnshire.

Rev Gunson originally came to the Whitby circuit for a five year stint but was asked to stay on for another two.

He said: “I have reached that magic age plus a little bit as well. I came into the ministry late, I was 56. I came for my official five years and a had a two year stay by invitation.

“I have enjoyed it and it is a lovely place to live. We are going to a completely different sort of scenery.

“We have made some lovely friends up here.”

When asked if he would be spending more time on hobbies Rev Gunson said: “I am going to cultivate some, I might even get an allotment.”

Rev John Pugh is taking over and there is a ‘Welcome Service’ planned at Briggswath on Sunday 11 September, 2pm.

The service will be taken by the Chair of District, Rev Stephen Burgess.

It is a joint service for John and the new Deacon, Helen Webster who will live in the manse at Upgang Lane.
