Youngsters' day with a difference for charity
YOUNGSTERS at Fylingdales School took part in a non-uniform day for children's charity UNICEF.
Jean Hutt, assistant headteacher at the school was delighted at the success of the event and sent a press release to the Whitby Gazette which the children had written themselves.
It read: “The children of Fylingdales School took part in UNICEF’s Day for Change.
“This was to try and raise money for the people in Mozambique who do not have the same rights as we do.
“It was decided that to raise money the day would be a non-uniform day meaning every child in Fylingdales School would bring in at least 50p.
“The day was also Takeover Day which meant that the children in years five and six took over the school.
“Although the children were a little bit nervous they were extremely excited about planning and teaching lessons, leading two assemblies, taking charge of the office and supervising the playground.
“Throughout the day the children taught lessons based on UNICEF’s Right to be Healthy and how many children in Mozambique do not have these rights.
“The younger children commented on how much they enjoyed the activities that year five and six had planned for them, especially the activity where they could make their own Day for Change bracelet.
“At the end of the day the children in year five and six were extremely tired although they had really enjoyed the whole experience of running the school for the day.”
UNICEF is changing children’s lives in Mozambique but needs your help to do more.
For more than 20 years, schools across the UK have held an annual Day for Change, learning about and raising money for children around the world.
In exchange for making a change for that day – for instance, wearing fancy dress, a sponsored walk, or a cake sale – parents, children and teachers make a donation to improve education and health for children in Mozambique
Every day in Mozambique, about 400 children under the age five die, mainly of preventable causes.
One in two children lack safe drinking water and around one in three girls do not get the chance to attend primary school.
