Young actors reliving the Captain Cook experience
WHITBY schoolchildren have been re-living the experiences of Captain Cook thanks to some exciting drama workshops.
As part of a Heritage Lottery-funded project, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Grape Lane has taken a drama presentation and workshop into schools as part of its programme of activities relating to the current Kamchatka exhibition.
Schools in Egton, Glaisdale, Goathland and Castleton along with Whitby’s West Cliff, Stakesby, Eskdale and St Hilda’s schools, all took part in the fun.
The drama presentation involves three local actors – Katrina Stead, Fiona Organ and Andy Bowes – running workshops with children aged four to 11.
Mrs Stead, the drama presentation and workshop co-ordinator, said: “This project has been a great opportunity for schools in the area and also includes a free visit to the museum.
“Using actors in costume, the presentation recounts some of the experiences on the voyage of the Resolution and Discovery to Kamchatka in 1779, as seen through the eyes of the artist John Webber.
“The main activity revolves around taking children on an imaginative journey to Kamchatka.”
Speaking after the workshop at West Cliff school, she added: “It has gone very well today, the children said they thought it was absolutely wonderful.
“They have enjoyed pretending to be the crew of the Resolution on canoe rides and sledging in the snow.”
