Yobs throw lit firework into Sneaton pub

POLICE are investigating after yobs threw a lit firework into the porch of Sneaton's Wilson Arms.

Such was the noise of the explosion, the pub's co-owner Nicholas Mortimer thought a bomb had exploded.

The drama unfolded at around 10.15pm on Thursday as Mr Mortimer, who runs the pub with his business partner, was behind the bar.

More than 1,000 of damage has been caused to the porch's walls and carpets which took five hours to clean out. Fortunately after the initial explosion the firework fizzled out.

Nothing like this has ever happened before and Mr Mortimer said he is shocked such a thing should happen at their pub in quiet residential area.

He said: "All of a sudden this noise went off.

"It was so loud I dropped a glass out of my hand, it made me jump. I went rushing round. I thought I had better be careful, I could see it was a firework.

"The noise that it made and the amount of smoke it caused was something similar to what they let off at the end of regatta.

"It wasn't just an ordinary rocket, the noise was tremendous. It's sheer stupidity and those people concerned haven't a care about anyone else.

"There were people in the bar at the time. If it had been an hour or so earlier the bar was full with people eating. What are people going to think?"

Mr Mortimer said villagers who live near the pub came in straight away to see what happened and had been very shocked.

"We don't have this kind of behaviour, it's disgraceful."

PC Chris Bone of Whitby Police said the incident was "senseless".

"It's an offence to throw a firework. Anyone who does so will be prosecuted," he said.

Anyone who has information is asked to call Whitby Police on (0845) 6060247.
