Work starts on £30m luxury hotel resort at Raithwaite Hall

WORK has begun this week on a £30m luxury hotel resort in Sandsend which will create up to 150 jobs.

The Skelwith Group, owner of the 80-acre Raithwaite Hall Country Retreat, has appointed family-owned Wates Construction as the main contractor for the development, which was given the green light by Scarborough Borough Council in May.

Wates, whose portfolio includes the 17m Bridlington Spa project, has already begun work.

The estate, off the Sandsend Road, already has 11 holiday cottages. The plans for the site include a 44-bed five star hotel and spa complex and further cottages being built in the grounds.

Up to 50 people will be on site at any one time during the 60-week construction programme, which will use local labour and suppliers wherever possible.

Once the hotel is opened in 2011 it is anticipated around 150 jobs will be created.

Paul Ellis, managing director of the Skelwith Group, said: “It’s great to get work started on this fantastic development.

“We are very proud of the vision for this site and we are confident it will become an international destination and prove to be a massive boost for the area.

“Wates Construction is a first-class operation and I have no doubt they will deliver this project on time and on budget.”

The hotel will feature a state-of-the-art spa and will be a sister hotel to the Skelwith Group’s 100m Flaxby Country Club, between York and Harrogate. Wates Construction is also lined up to build that hotel.

A fine dining restaurant and luxury bar will also be included, as well as a conference and function area to seat up to 180 people.

The spa totals 6,000 square feet and will feature the latest treatments and technology, making it one of the most impressive in the North of England.

Scarborough Borough Council’s economic development manager, David Kelly, said: “It’s great to see the Skelwith Group investing in the local tourist economy and this is just the kind of development that will provide a catalyst for further economic growth in the whole area.”

In 1991 Raithwaite made the headlines when shipping tycoon William Headlam bequeathed the bulk of his 7m fortune, including the estate, to his Swiss nurse Trudi Tanner, making her one of the richest women in Britain overnight. She gave up running the estate a couple of years ago when she retired to a house nearby.
