A GROUP of carol singers have raised their voices and plenty of cash for a cancer charity.

The Windmill Girls, a group of enthusiastic female singers called The Windmill Girls, meet every year in November to rehearse acapella carols at the Windmill pub in Stainsacre and this year, at the Hare and Hounds at Hawsker too.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, they entertained residents in retirement homes on several nights and patients in Whitby Hospital as well as touring a large number of pubs and restaurants in Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay.

Their efforts collected £433 for Cancer Research.

The girl’s leader, Sue Rowland, said: ‘We have great fun every year singing and enjoying time together.

“I can’t imagine anything better to get in the mood for Christmas than singing favourite carols with friends, and helping to fund research into causes and treatments for cancer makes it doubly rewarding.

“I’m looking forward to next year already.”

All money raised in the Whitby area for Cancer Research goes to the North of England research centre at Newcastle.

The centre at Newcastle specialises in cancers of the blood in children and adults, and is also working on tailoring treatments to individual patients’ needs.

Cancer Research UK funds the work of more than 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses, who are doing research into 200 types of cancer.
