Whitby teenager builds new career
A WHITBY teenager is building a new career in construction after gaining a bricklaying apprenticeship which will see him work on a new housing development in Whitby.
Sixteen-year-old Dan Richardson landed the job with housebuilder Yuill Homes after gaining a bricklaying apprenticeship with the North East Apprenticeshop Company (NEAC) – an organisation tasked with increasing the number of young people taking up apprenticeships across the region who recommmended him.
The former Whitby Community College pupil had been looking to learn a trade but wanted to secure a career which offered proper training and enables him to gain an industry recognised qualification.
As part of his apprenticeship with the NEAC, Dan will be working with the Yuill Homes team at its Whitby development, The Old Creamery, which is sited just off White Leys Road in the town.
The Old Creamery will have a selection of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes for sale.
Yuill Homes are the approved sales and construction contractor for Broadacres Services Ltd and are working in partnership with Broadacres Housing Association on the site to offer an element of affordable homes.
Dan will also be working towards gaining his NVQ Level II in Bricklaying at Redcar and Cleveland College, which will equip him with the training, skills and a qualification to secure a long term career in the building industry.
The NEAC worked in partnership with Yuill Homes to find a suitable apprentice for its Whitby site and will be overseeing Dan's placement, while arranging the training and support required for his apprenticeship.
Dan, who found out about working with Yuill through the NEAC website, said: "I had been looking for an apprenticeship for a while and it's great that there is a service that exists like the NEAC to help people like me who want to get on with finding a job and learning a trade.
"I'm definitely looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and becoming a qualified bricklayer – it's what I've always wanted to do."
The NEAC has a regional brief to reduce youth unemployment, tackling the skills gap and creating more than 1,000 new apprentice jobs in the next two years, particularly among small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Managing director Paul Champion said: "Best wishes to Dan in his new career.
"I'm sure that with his aptitude for hard work and ability, he'll do very well.
"We are seeing a lot of interest from many regional employers like Yuill Homes which wants to invest in young people and sees them as key to the future development of the business."
Andrew Pegg from Yuill Homes, added: "Yuill Homes is committed to delivering and establishing successful communities through partnership working and we are working with a number of organisations on the White Leys Road scheme, including Scarborough Borough Council.
"We are very keen to recruit young people on our sites and the NEAC has helped us to achieve this in Whitby.
"We're delighted that Dan will be working with us."
