Whitby students get GCSE results

PUPILS from across Whitby were keeping their fingers crossed on Tuesday as GCSE results were finally released.

Youngsters at Whitby Community College and Fyling Hall were among more than half a million students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland who opened the dreaded envelopes this week.

Fyling Hall reported a massive 77% increase in A* – C exam passes, while the college said they had a record number of students reaching the standard pass requirements.

Nationally records were broken again with almost seven out of 10 (69.1%) being awarded a C grade or above, while 22.6% of exams were awarded an A* or A.

Whitby Community College improved on its GCSE record from last year with record numbers of their pupils reaching the required standard to continue in post 16 education.

Seventy one per cent of students gained five A* – C passes overall compared to 69% last year, while 56% of students gained five A* – C passes, including English and maths, compared to 52% last year.

Headteacher Keith Prytherch said: "We are absolutely delighted with the results as we have improved in many areas from last year.

"The success of these students will now feed directly into sixth form.

"This bodes well for their futures as it gives them many options in education mid-life."

Among the top scorers were Heather Jenkinson (16), who got 12 GCSEs and is going on to study art, German and maths and James Lillis (16), who got 10.5 and will be studying PE, biology, psychology and maths.

Both pupils, along with six others, attained nine or more passes at a grade A* or A.

The college was also celebrating the results of its adult learners.

Matt Jones (32), was working the on the doors in Whitby before achieving two B grades in English and maths, and a A in science.

"I'm absolutely delighted with the results," said Matt, who is now going on to study in Middlesbrough.

He added: "The results have been a massive boost to my confidence and I want to tell anyone reading this article that if I can do it they can too."

At Fyling Hall, near Robin Hood's Bay, pupils were celebrating a increase from 13% to 90% in the A* – C pass rate for year 11 pupils.

Headmaster Ken James said: "This year's group have always been academically strong but have also worked hard to achieve an impressive set of results.

"Some of the pupils have been with us since they were four and the teachers have taken great pleasure in seeing them excel this summer."

Some of their best achievers included Rebecca Bennion (16), from Briggswath, who achieved eight A*s and three As and Charlotte Edge (16) from Scarborough, who only returned to the UK at the beginning of year 11, achieving five A*s and four As, including an A* in Spanish last year.

So far school results show that the county has achieved some of its best ever scores, with the proportion of pupils achieving five GCSE passes at A* – C rising by six per cent on last year's 78% figure.

County councillor John Watson, North Yorkshire's executive member for schools, said: "We are delighted with this year's results and congratulate students for all their hard work and teaching staff for their dedication and high quality teaching."
