Whitby's Spirit of the 40s Weekend set to be 'biggest and best'

WHITBY's Spirit of the 40s Weekend is set to be bigger and better than ever.

The event will run from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 April, it has been annouced.

It was launched on Saturday outside Dock End where the Paul Nicholas School of Acting performed 40s style theatre and a vintage motorcycle was on display.

The main events, held at Whitby Pavilion, start on the Friday evening, with a hangar dance and the vocals of Lola Lamour.

The All Ruzzit Buzzit team will lead the way if you're a beginner – to stroll, jive and quickstep, with supper included, priced at 8.

On the Saturday, the Pavilion welcomes The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra.

Founded in 2003, the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra UK's repertoire includes classics by the likes of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey and Harry James plus renditions from the heart-throb vocalist.

Sunday starts with a victory breakfast, a classic singalong and hearty breakfast, then relax and round off the weekend with some superb music and song including many old favourites at the gala concert.

The event is being run by the Whitby and District Tourism Association and is supported by Scarborough Borough Council (SBC).

The association has chosen Help for Heroes this year as the lead charity for the event and a variety of fund-raising activities will be held throughout the weekend in a bid to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

Janet Deacon, tourism manager, for SBC said: "The 40s Weekend is a super event which offers a whole range of activities for visitors and residents to experience.

"The partnership this year has worked extremely hard to ensure this event is even bigger and better than previous years, so this is certainly something not to be missed."

Regional co-ordinator for Help for Heores Shane Monkman added: "I really appreciate that Whitby and District Tourism Association and SBC has chosen to support our charity.

"The weekend promises to be a real success and hopefully, as well as everyone having a great time reliving the 40s, we can also raise some money for our brave young men and women returning injured and wounded from today's conflicts."
