Whitby's folk week festival drawing to a close

The 45th annual Whitby Folk Week draws to a close today after a fabulous week of live music, song and dance.

Celebrating traditional British culture through song, dance and story-telling, the festival has enjoyed another successful year.

Music lovers and those new to the festival packed out pubs, B&Bs, hostels and campsites.

The popular event started on Saturday with a parade from Crescent Gardens which travelled through the streets of the town, with crowds lining the way to watch.

Throughout the week there have been dance performances and live music by many international performers, as well as workshops and big evening concerts.

Barry Evans, festival organiser, said: "It's been going very well, quite a lot of the concerts have been very well attended.

"We had one or two full concerts and ended up turning people away at the door."

This year the event clashed with another of the town's crowd pullers, the Whitby Regatta, but organisers worked together to make the most of both events.

"The Regatta people included us in the programme, the only impact is a positive one," added Mr Evans.

Many of the week's folk dancers joined the Saturday parade and there will be a final parade today, with students and teachers from the dance workshops, starting at around 4.30pm from Crescent Gardens.
