Whitby farm hit by seventh mystery blaze in four years

A FARM has been hit by a seventh mystery blaze in four years.

Firefighters were called to a field, off the old railway line near Northcliffe Caravan Park at Hawsker, after receiving reports of straw bales on fire.

Thirty-four round bales of straw worth 700 were destroyed in the fire which police are treating as arson.

Around the time of the blaze, a dark-coloured vehicle, similar in shape to a Ford Capri, was seen to be driven at speed from the area.

It is the second time in a year dairy farmer Tom Cummins, who farms at Russell Hall Farm in Stainsacre, has been targeted at this location.

The Whitby Gazette reported in April how Mr Cummins spoke of his despair after being the victim of a sixth arson attack back in April.

A "substantial" reward stumped up last year by concerned locals has failed to produce any leads for police and is still on offer.

Anyone with any information regarding this crime is asked to call PC193 Tracy Rogers at Whitby Police Station on telephone (0845) 6060247 quoting reference 12100142011.
