A WHITBY grandad has raised over £4000 for charities which helped his grandson when he was born with a serious heart condition.
Mark Dring and his family raised £2300 for the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and £1600 for Little Hearts Matter which is a charity that offers support for the families of youngsters born with heart defects.
Four-month old Toby Dring has just celebrated his first Christmas and one his family feared they might never see after he was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
It affects just one in 5000 babies and occurs when the left side of the heart fails to form properly.
After a series of tests and operations Toby is back home at Upgang Lane with mum Sophie and on the road to recovery.
Mr Dring who is a rig manager for Marriott Drilling and is working on one of York Potash’s exploration sites organised a charity day with his family which featured a race night and raffle.
He said: “We wanted to raise money for the remarkable team at the Children’s Heart Unit where Toby has spent the majority of his short life.
“We feel indebted to all of the staff who cared for Toby. Our target was to raise £1000 so we have vastly exceeded our expectations.”
