Whitby district villages find there's no batter way to have a flipping good pancake

SHROVE Tuesday was celebrated in Egton and Robin Hood's Bay with a feast of traditional pancakes in aid of local good causes.

In Egton, Joan Flintoft and Peter Godbold with a team of helpers made pancakes for 60 people as well as two kinds of soup.

Peter said: "We started off with a choice of soup and then everyone got two pancakes each with a choice of lemon and sugar, golden or maple syrup or strawberry or chocolate sauce.

"We charged 4.50 a time and made 380 for church funds and we were pleased that people came from other villages in the area as well as from Egton and Egton Bridge.

"We have a team of 10 people in the village who help with all our fund-raising efforts and we couldn't do without their support.

"The money will go towards meeting a bill of 1,500 a year for the church insurance."

The vicar, the Rev Christine Haddon-Reece, also enjoyed a pancake lunch and the hard-working cooks and helpers had their pancakes later.

Further fund-raising efforts for the church include a Dalesmen Singers' concert on 27 March in Egton Church followed by a buffet supper with tickets priced at 5 inclusive and a St George's Day four-course dinner on 23 April, cost 15. For tickets and further information call Peter on (01947) 895514.

In Robin Hood's Bay, David and Sarah Lowe of the Grosvenor Hotel hosted their second annual all-you-can-eat pancake fest, raising 314 shared between the village's scout and cub groups and the RNLI.

David said: "We were happy to host the event once again and we hope everyone enjoyed it."

Scout leader Sam Glaysher said: "It was a fantastic night supported by many local families and we raised much needed funds for the scouts and the RNLI.

"We were grateful to Sally and Andy Fewster who slaved away in the kitchen, to the many other helpers involved and to the Co-op for donating all the ingredients and to Skerry Hall Farm for the donation of the star meat raffle prize."

Sam also said there are now a few spaces available in the scouts and cubs and anyone who wants their children to join should call her on 07780 732115.
