WHITBY woke up to another carpeting of snow this morning after more adverse weather overnight.

Around two inches is said to have fallen over the higher ground and moors overnight after up to eight inches fell in some places yesterday (Monday).

It means some schools are closed again to pupils for safety reasons and Ruswarp and Lythe have already announced they will be shut today but Whitby Community College will be open as normal.

Driving conditions throughout the main roads of Whitby are passable but strong winds have caused problems on the moors roads and routes over higher ground.

The A171 last night heading towards both Middlesbrough and Scarborough was treacherous because strong winds were causing snow drifts but they are passable with care this morning.

According to the Highways Agency the A169 Pickering Road is still closed between Blue Bank and Pickering although it is hoped the road will be clear by mid-afternoon.

A spokesman for Highways said although the main road is shut, people can travel via Goathland and continue back onto the A169 which is open from the Pickering end.
