WHITBY'S SUPERMARKET VERDICT (5.30pm): Sainsbury's and Co-op get the green light
SAINSBURY'S will build a new supermarket on the outskirts of Whitby after a controversial meeting at Whitby Community College this afternoon.
And the Co-op has also been granted approval for its expansion plans in the town centre.
Sainsbury's has got the go-ahead for a store of 30,000 sq ft net sales (2,787 sq m) but it has to adhere to 26 different conditions.
More than 300 people attended the four-and-a-half hour meeting, as well as TV crews, to hear the verdict of Scarborough Borough Council's planning and development committee.
After the deliberations and adjournment, the final decision was met with jubilation by many in the packed hall.
The planners' move was not without controversy as last week, Whitby Town councillors recommended refusal of both the Sainsbury and Tesco sites.
Early in the meeting, Sainsbury's surprised everyone by announcing plans for a petrol station - which would be based at an alternative site in the town.
Dorothy Clegg, chairing the meeting, did well to keep control as tensions were running high and threatened to call a halt to the meeting if people did not calm down.
