The Whitby community has been working hard over the weekend to clear up the aftermath of Thursday’s flooding, the worst seen on the coastline in more than 50 years.
Businesses such as Specsavers, Scope, and many others have now reopened and are battling on despite damage to property and products.
The majority of residents have also returned to their homes, although a number of the worst affected are expected to remain in temporary accommodation for some time.
Jim Dillon, chief executive of the borough council, said: “The community spirit shown along our coastline in the last few days has been outstanding. The fact that many businesses have now re-opened and many residents have returned to their homes, shows just how much hard work everyone has put in to start to return to normal.”
An assessment of the exact number of properties affected by flooding is ongoing, although last week Northern Powergrid said 3,000 customers fell victims of the severe powercut which hit the town.
Mr Dillon added: “For some there will be a long road ahead to full recovery and together with our partners we will do all we can to assist them in that process and help them back on their feet. In the meantime, we would urge local communities to continue to support each other, especially the affected businesses in the run up to Christmas, who have pulled out all the stops to reopen as quickly as possible.”
As part of the review of the flooding incident, North Yorkshire County Council is encouraging residents and businesses to pass on any information relating to the flooding that may help with the ongoing investigations. Relevant information should be emailed to email@example.com
