Whitby railway posters go under the hammer
RARE vintage rail posters advertising Whitby as a holiday destination are set to go under the hammer for thousands of pounds.
International auction house, Bloomsbury Auctions, will be holding a sale of Vintage British Rail and Travel Posters in New York on Wednesday 31 March.
The LNER lithographs are part of 198 lots which belonged to an American collector who had built up the collection over the past 20 years.
Among the images, which would have once been displayed at railway stations across England, is a poster by William Lee Hankey from 1930 showing Whitby harbour with St Mary's Church and the town's Swing Bridge estimated to sell for between 1,334 to 2,001.
The building of Captain Cook's Endeavour features on another poster from 1940 by Frank Mason which is estimated will sell for between 2,001 and 2,668 ($2,000 and $4,000).
Other images include a 1925 poster by K Hauff and another poster called The Yorkshire Coble, also by Frank Mason.
International poster consultant Richard Barclay said they have had interest already in the posters from as far afield as Australia, America and in the UK.
He said: "It's a fabulous collection. It's very very rare to find 200 in one go all in a fabulous condition from one owner. I'm hoping it will generate some interest." Other lots include posters depicting Durham and North-umberland.
