Parts of Whitby are still blacked out as a power cut plunged the town into darkness.

Emergency services, which were already under pressure trying to protect properties in the Church Street and Pier Road areas as water levels rose before high tide, were diverted to deal with crowds who were in town for late night shopping.

Baxtergate was closed and evacuated because of the fire and it was feared that there was a danger of electrocution from the water so police tried to keep people clear of the New Quay Road area which was already under water.

Power cuts started to affect parts of old Church Street from around 4.30pm but within an hour that had spread to Spital Bridge, Bridge Street New Quay Road and the Fishburn estate.
